THE LOOMS USEDThe vertical, horizontal and roller beam. Designs, rectilinear or curvilinear, depend very much on the influence of the traditional motifs and the creative expressions of the weaver. City and village weavers use the vertical loom. Their designs are predominantly floral for the city rugs and floral/geometric for the village rugs. As such, carpets of this nature can be made on a commercial level to cater to the demand for new city and village rugs with a variety of designs and colours. The nomadic weavers prefer the horizontal loom, which consists of two wooden beams, and between them, the warp threads are held in tension within the two beams with the support of a port on either side, which are firmly fixed to the ground. The horizontal loom is convenient for the migrating tribes. All they have to do is remove the posts and roll up the unfinished rug and warp threads around the two beams, whenever it is time to migrate. For carpets that are unusually long, the roller beam loom is used, especially by city weavers in larger factories or workshops.......... |
